How do yall balance being informed about the news

While also not being depressed all the time?

Limit my time. Try to balance screentime in general because everything became a trigger today. I read the sweetest, fluffiest fic, and that had me bawling my eyes out.

I limit my time, I try to only view the news during the day as well, I leave it alone before bed. I also balance it with nice things, mostly fantasy, scifi, and cats. And I focus on clients. When I can help one person I feel a little better.

I limit as well, but sometimes it still gets too much and I go into a news blackout. Sometimes I just need a rest from it all.

I wish I could do that sometimes. I do go semi-blackout sometimes. But given that some of it is actively applicable to my job, I just can't avoid it all.

Another vote for limiting my time. I also tend to stick to headlines and summaries, only reading a few stories in full. It’s still depressing but not as bad. I think it also helps that I’ve kinda given up and truly believe things won’t get better, so the bad news (which is all of it) doesn’t hit as hard.

It's difficult these days, I know.

But like others say... you have to limit your time. Maybe even force yourself to skip a day of news. If it's something critical, it will find its way to your ears.

Also, if you must read/watch news, try to stick with genuinely balanced sources (not shit networks that say they are and then stoke the rage of their viewers). It can help with NOT spiraling into despair.

Limit social media as well, since both people and news sources like to dump there too. Echo chambers make it worse.

I live in denial.

Set boundaries on what you are and aren't willing to read. I am limiting myself to only reading reports of events that have already happened, no op-eds or speculation. Too much "what if" sends my anxiety through the roof.

I have found being selective about which outlets I engage with is key. I also avoid pieces with loaded language in its headlines or captions. Media Bias Fact Check is my go-to resource for checking up on new to me sources and helps me better understand any biases I encounter.

I get news once a day, and I curate any social media I have to not have news on it. Which means I don't actually have very active social media but that's fine.
