the thing you have to understand is that after 9/11, the entire american media landscape went absolutely insane. if you wanted ANYONE to call Bush & co on any of their lies or insane bullshit, your ONLY real options were Bill Maher, Keith Olbermann, and Jon Stewart. the emotional attachment to stewart is less about him being this incredible force for goodness and journalism, and more just the sheer fucking relief of "oh god I'm not crazy, they really are doing/saying this bullshit, thank god someone said it out loud"

but ultimately he's a comedian first and has some deeply centrist sensibilities, both of which have always lead him into bothsidesism when the democrats like, had enough power to do anything at all

Can't criticize the Democrats, even when they fuck up! Have to pretend to be okay with everything they do, otherwise you're a dirty centrist! What's that? Obama said it wasn't a priority to enshrine abortion in law in order to make an end-run around the challenge to Roe v Wade that everyone knew was coming, even as his party kept saying, "vote for us to save abortion rights?" Can't bring that up, it's "bothsidesism"! Oh, Obama signed into law a version of the NDAA that makes it possible to hold American citizens indefinitely without trial -- something we were afraid Bush would do? Can't bring that up, it's "bothsidesism"! His administration killed countless people overseas with unprecedented amounts of drone strikes -- something we were afraid Bush would do? Can't bring that up, it's "bothsidesism"!

Let 'em do whatever they want. Let them lie to us in order to hold onto power. Never, ever mention what they've done wrong. That's both. Fucking. Sideism.

god I wish JS were as radical as you and not just interested in cheap shots at the idea of ""polarization"" as default negative regardless of the positions actually being held

and tbh given that the ACA literally saved my life and Obama broke his political back getting it passed, I don't personally have the energy to criticize everything else he was too cautious to do in the face of the most obstructionist congress in a hundred years, but like, I'm genuinely glad you do. please direct that anger at like, current democrats and not a arguement specifically about Jon Stewart, extremely vocal Gen X Both-sides-er, who literally held a giant rally for "reason and decency" (ie, being less partisan) and not any of those positions you're concerned about
