I thought Chinese shows weren't allowed to have gay characters even if they get buried. (Sorry, subtext when it's legally necessary still doesn't make them canon gay.)

Yes, subtext makes some characters canon as well. Especially when the show is based on a BL novel with a canon pair. Don't know if that's the case here but with shows based on a novel with a canon ship, subtext for legal reasons means it's canon.
