I was going to say. Yes, most of it is pure fantasy, but the Eastern Archipelago is very, very obviously meant to be a fantasy version of feudal Japan.

Massively late to this party but, as with many pre-modern societies, feudal Japanese aesthetics were inclined to robust figures. Literature from that era straight up waxes poetic about beautiful court ladies' double chins.
