That assumes everyone is writing porn, though. You think that even being involved in fandom is going to reflect negatively on your job opportunities? (My name and email are not associated with this account except in the slightest of ways, I'm just... confused.)

I think people may be under the impression that everyone outside of fandom thinks that non-smutty fanfics are totally normal and okay for adults to be writing. Which is not the case at all. Even if I wrote 100% g-rated fic, I still would not tell *anyone* in my real life about it unless I was already sure they were fannishly oriented already. Most people think that writing *any* sort of fanfic is weird and immature and creepy. Add that to the fact that an awful lot of people outside of fandom don't realise that there is such a thing as fanfic that isn't pornographic slash (my husband, who I talk openly with about writing fic but who is not in fandom himself, still uses the words "fic" and "slash" interchangably because he thinks they are the same thing despite the many times I've corrected him).

Nah, I'm not under that impression. I do know that a lot of the people I speak with are willing to hear me out about it, though. Not that I'm bringing it up in a job-search situation, but I have talked about it with friends of mine and friends of my parents. I guess I'm assuming less assumption than I ought to be. Really, though, keeping your name away from your online handle is just a good idea in general, I don't disagree with that at all.

No, I'm not assuming everyone is writing porn. It was an example, because porn seems to be a common factor in fandom. Not my bag, I don't read it or write it.

But being involved in fandom reflecting negatively? Yes, actually. Say you were in the 501st--it's a charity/community service type of troop. Of course, one of the requirements is dressing up in professional-grade Stormtrooper costumes. While it's something a non-fan-type coworker or boss would have no problem with--community service is good and all--they'd think you were kind of the weird one for making pretend that you were a Stormtrooper on your off days.

In fandom, we have these weird, bizarre, and intense discussions that just don't seem normal to non-fans. Someone in a professional aspect finding out that you roleplay an anime character in all earnestness, or that you have a boatload of fic written about a kid's cartoon, or stumbling on an in-depth discussion of the potential love-interests of a fictional character would probably find it just downright weird. It wouldn't get you fired or not-hired, but it would probably set you up to be made fun of at the very least.

The big thing, though, is your behavior in a fandom. Were you on scans_daily? Remember how it got shut down? Normal ranty-reviews of extreme vitriol taken out of context by someone who wasn't a part of that community. Imagine if a future employer found a review you'd written of a book or movie, just on a board, where you'd used fandomly-accepted hyperbole? If they don't know you as a person, they'll judge you by what they read there.

To spell it out, I'm not just saying "if you write a review" or "if you drew porn" or "if you roleplay/cosplay." Really, it's a matter of being on the internet at all. Non-fandom-folk get passed over because they had an embarrassing photo on myspace where they were being drunk or slutty, or were rude in a forum. It's not too far a leap in judgement to figure the same could happen if the first thing an employer found on your facebook was you cosplaying (depending on the costume).
Depends on the job too, I'd suppose. It's hypothetical.

But yes. People who aren't in fandoms tend to think of them as weird. Harmless and weird usually, but weird.
