Hey, don't get me wrong, I don't approve of this ridiculous investigative shit employers have got going on these days. But the thing is that it's a fact, whether you like it or not, so until it changes you simply have to use your head and make sure they can't link anything to you.

I've had separate emails for casual use & srs bsns, eg work-related, stuff for years now. The only online people who know my last name are those I've known for years. I've got a gazillion handles, and I'm not in the habit of using my real birthdate or location. If a potential employer actually managed to pin something on me I'd be so fucking impressed that I'd be much more interested in figuring out how the hell he did it than getting the job.

The word itself is heavily and negatively gendered in use and meaning.

And even if you use different handles, if you've ever used paypal, worked for state, local, or fed govt, gone to university, gotten a license, been involved with a business with a web presence, been in the paper, etc your real name is out there. I had someone figure out how to tie me to a piece of fanfic I'd written 10 years and as many SNs ago and I had never posted my real name anywhere. That person was looking as an exercise and with my okay, not as pre-hiring investigation, but the idea that you're ever anonymous on the internet without taking CIA-level precautions is completely fallacious. So yeah, I think your reaction was inappropriate given that it does happen and the OP has a legitimate fear. This is also fandom secrets, where obviously people say things they wouldn't say or make a big deal about either. There was no reason for you to react as you did, either to him/her or to me.

Yeah, by calling me a cunt. Even if I misinterpreted what you were saying, that wasn't appropriate. If being misread or read literally is enough to make you respond that way you maybe shouldn't be saying it in the first place on a public discussion forum. People's tones get misinterpreted all the time on the internet (you clearly missed mine). You can have a disagreement with a modicum of civility and without the loaded, offensive terminology.

I swear a lot. my best friends get called bitches on a daily basis. it's hot, it's late, and the non-srs bsns nature of this comm does not make me want to be all ~careful and PC~ with my language. no offense was intended, though you've made it very much clear that it was taken.

Look, I'm not foaming at the mouth, I'm not even angry; I don't get angry over "mean words" on the internet. Calling it an offensive, loaded term is calling it for what it is, and I *do* hate to see this perpetual self-reinforcement of misogynist terminology especially in a hobby/forum that is hugely predominantly female.
