Distance and subject matter do matter. Does that G-rated Pokemon fic you wrote at age 11 hurt your hiring chances? No, that's absurd. But if it's an ongoing hobby, or something more recent (if you're looking for a job during/after college, high school was only 2-5 years ago, and they may not even notice that it's several years old), or you've ever written something more adult, just be cautious, and keep the email addresses as separated as possible. Even if it could be linked back to you most employers don't dig that deep if they can find things with basic email and name searches.

(And yes, there is a double-standard for kid-friendly fanart, and yes, it kinda sucks).

My only question is, do they really go to the trouble of READING all of this? One of my fics is 40,000+ words and it only gets starts getting sexual around 10+. Would they read all of that or just go "hey, fuck it, this potential employee is a weirdo, mark them off as such"?

Ha, I'm sure they wouldn't read all of it if they did (my own are ~2000 word porn, so I have different concerns ;p). You probably have ratings or content warnings so they'd know it was dirty without reading it, though, no? I mean, as a general rule it's best to keep it as separate as possible especially if you think someday in the future you might end up in a conservative/professional field (because I've learned from experience that nothing on the internet dies, eeeever).

That makes sense. I guess I'm not particularly worried because the only thing outrightly connected with my fics is my email address, (which I'm sure won't still be one I use 5 years from now), and I'm sure I have stray bits of information out there too.
I'm strongly considering going into a branch of journalism. Would you consider that conservative/professional?
