As an outsider who was never in the fandom and never shipped or drew or looked at smut any of these characters, even I could tell just from fandom osmosis that Homestuck suffered greatly from standard anime/JRPG/JJK-itis where "13 year olds" did not act 13, like at all.

I don't think anybody besides actual children finds realistic 13 year olds relatable.

i don't homestuck but i always assumed the fandom aged the characters up for spicy content or just thought of them as older.

A teenager 'sexualizing' a character their age: Creepy, you're sexualizing teens.
A teenager sexualizes a canonical adult character: Uh, why are you doing this so young? Wait until you're 18. (But if you do wait until you're 18 to look at fanfic/art smut, that's somehow grooming.)
An adult/older teen aging up a teenage character: You're only doing that to placate your guilt over being a pedo.
An adult keeping them their canon age: PEDO!

This was my experience when I was in the South Park fandom as a teenager. About 90% of the fanworks had aged the characters up for shipping stuff alongside being teenagers written/drawn by teenagers - but plenty of people outside the fandom had the same 'Ew why are you thinking like that about CHILDREn?!'

Meanwhile, spending my formative fandom years in HS fandom back on Tumblr starting in 2011 and waking up one day and suddenly antis have pearlclutched the fun out of everything has been a fucking trip. Back in the day you were more likely to get dogpiled in your askbox over posting Danganronpa spoilers than for lewding a fictional teenager.

I think most of the fandom was not treating their ages as literal, it squicks me out too but I don't take it as a sexualization of their ages in general. And another portion of the fandom were teens themselves, myself included. That said, a subset was into the characters being young specifically and a subset of those people were not just into it in fiction, I had really awful experiences with this fandom! Fun times too, but I'm pretty soured on it by the creeps I knew. Like in terms of actual harm done to me and just unpleasant experiences I would definitely say it's the worst fandom I was ever a part of.

are you new to fandom, somehow, despite being able to look retrospectively at it? this is an extremely common phenomenon in just about any fandom with ostensibly underage characters. the fan works exist in a sort of implicit au; people are not actually writing/drawing them with children in mind.

To be fair, some of the story does deal with older characters, and the main characters eventually have several birthdays.

Heck, the story even starts with Jon Egbert's birthday.

I don't see what the big issue is, personally.

in my experience, and as someone already mentioned, the fanbase were mostlyy teens, so it was mostly teens who did nsfw also.
then there was timeskip with them aged up, and also some chars were dead in dreambubbles, and some just wrote aged up AUs and stuff... there was a lot of ways ppl did nsfw stuff with the chars that imo didn't feel bad/weird at all.
and then the age of antis began... but by that time I was out of the fandom, so idk how that truly went, only seen some stuff.
