(Anonymous) 2024-08-03 02:05 am (UTC)(link)First of all: the statement as presented is simply untrue. "All we achieved after six years of war was to leave Eastern Europe under a Communist dictatorship instead of a fascist dictatorship." Well, no. Without the war, all of Europe would have been under dictatorship - a Communist one in Eastern Europe, and a Fascist one in Western and Central Europe. So the quote simply ignores and skips over the liberation from dictatorship of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Austria, Denmark, and Western and Southern Germany. All of those countries were freed from Nazi domination by the war.
Second: the war was in British interests, and Britain was better off as a result of fighting it, both materially and morally. Materially, Germany was a direct continental rival to Britain. They would only have accepted peace with Britain on terms of humiliation and subjugation, and dominating Europe they would have been able to outcompete and far outstrip Britain in every way. By going to war, Britain was able to achieve the ultimate destruction of the German empire and end the German domination over continental Europe that would have been so disastrous for Britain.
Britain did not defeat the Soviet Union, but the Soviet Union was much less powerful than Nazi Germany had been. The areas controlled by the Soviets were much less rich and powerful than the areas that the Germans had controlled or dominated. So going to war allowed the UK to defeat by far the more threatening of its two rivals. And Britain was left in a state that was, compared to the rest of continental Europe, which was utterly ravaged, far better off economically by comparison. In relative terms, Britain was doing very well compared to the rest of Europe in 1945.
And morally, it was absolutely morally right and morally obligatory to oppose the Nazis as stridently as possible because they were pure evil. But more than that - Britain is a free, democratic country. It benefits, then, from being part of a free democratic community of other nations. It is in the moral interests of Britain for Western and Central Europe to be free nations not under Nazi domination. And that was achieved by the war. Britain was able to ensure that most of Europe would be democratic and free. That was an enormous and valuable achievement.
So going to war allowed Britain to defeat its greatest continental rival in Germany. Going to war resulted in the end of Nazi domination over Europe and allowed for most of Western Europe to be free and independent. And the end of the war left Britain in a better relative position compared to continental Europe. Based on that calculus, it's clear that it was the right decision for Britain to go to war. And, of course, that's why all British political parties in 1939 were in favor of it: because it was so obviously the right thing for Britain to do.
