This is not directly related to the 'characters who would never turn soft' bit but I read this on reddit and I just really need to ask someone who knows more about Sauron than I do:

Was he really going to be a cat in, like, the very very first draft of the story? Long before most of the world was even built/lore was created? Have you heard anything about this?

(and because I'm sure someone will think I am trolling or making fun: no, I'm not. this is a genuine question.)

Yes and no. It wasn't Sauron per say. But one of the stories that eventually he was the main villain in (Finrod vs. Sauron and then Luthien shows up and kicks his ass) originally had a giant evil cat-creature named Tevildo. The thing is, it wasn't exactly a cat per say. Tolkien did his own version of certain things. We have a vampire that is nothing like other vampires and we have wolves/werewolves that aren't like other werewolves. And then we have the spider-creatures that are more like Lovecraftian creatures than straight-up spiders. So Tevildo both was and wasn't a cat. And it wasn't Sauron per say, it is just that Sauron eventually takes that role in the story.

Tolkien rewrote the different stories of the history of Middle Earth many times over his lifetime. The official version is in the Silmarillion, which he gave his son permission to publish after his death. But his son has also published lots of the different versions and the evolution of the stories.

Part of it was that Huan the hound is part of the story, and Tolkien originally was thinking a dog vs. cat myth. But the story evolved.
