It's been a while since I read the arc, but I didn't feel Kyoko's mother was that soft or misunderstood despite her friend/coworker trying to cast her in a softer light.

I think it showed she was a complicated person and fucked up in her own right, who really failed Kyoko and acknowledged now that she was never a good mother and never would be. But it helped clean some of Kyoko's wounds to know her a little better, and while she can never expect much from her mother (outside of possibly monetary/legal support) now can be relieved to know her mother won't fuck things up for her.

I just think it would have been more interesting if it had been played straight rather than walking it back. More interesting drama, but also more interesting opportunities for Kyoko to grow.
