Everytime I turn my adblocker off, my antivirus software starts pinging like crazy. Nah, I'm keeping it on.

Ad providers lost their right to me disabling my ad blocker when they took their ads from "a single unobtrusive banner in the corner of a website" to "three dozen flashing images and videos, rife with viruses, that cover the entirety of the website and take up two-thirds of my CPU processor".

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Even the old banner adds that contained screaming emoticons if you accidentally mouseovered them were better than the current crop of viruses.

THIS. Back in the day when ads were relatively unobtrusive and didn't negatively impact your ability to read or navigate a website, I was fine with not having an adblocker. Now? No way. Not when large, animated ads take up a significant portion of the page, there are pop up videos that block the text I'm trying to read, etc.

Tfw you're trying to read an article and some animated atrocity embedded halfway down suddenly appears and blocks three or four paragraphs!

Asking to turn off or whitelist a site with your adblocker is like asking to go raw during sex with a stranger. No. I don't want to catch whatever they've got.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
This, exactly.

As a fan translator myself, I call bullshit on that person's claims. You can host fan translations without paying a single cent for them, my group has never paid for hosting for any of our stuff.

Yeah, I was just considering whether to reply with what you just said. The e-begging seems to go hand in hand with e-lying a lot, lately.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The two have always gone hand-in-hand.

I did without an ad blocker in order to support my small creators until I started getting "uwu pls turn off your ad blocker" pop-ups while staring at their ads, because I was blocking tracking cookies.

At which point, fuck 'em.

it's wild that we moved from pop-up-ridden sites being a red flag the site was going to kill your computer to advertisers thinking "those scammers have such a good idea"

ads suck.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
The way I see it, ads are obsolete. The only voluntary contact I have with companies is on a "don't call me. I'll call you," basis. When I ask Startpage an extremely specific, commerce-related question, like "hours office supply store [my town]" I want information about something I'm planning to spend money on. The ENTIRE rest of the time I'm on the internet, I am not shopping, and I am not willing to let people make money by non-consensually wasting my time with lies about random businesses.

People who can't do their thing on the internet without selling other people's eyeballs are immoral.

When I want shop I type in specific terms into my search engine, I've never seen an ad for anything I'm actually ever looking for! Like high quality pillow protectors?? Never see ads for those! So yeah, I agree ads are obsolete and tend to be full of malware/viruses. It's best to browse the internet safely with an ad-blocker.
