"A Hero of Our Time," written by Mihail Lermontov, translated and annotated by Vladimir Nabokov. The footnotes are 50% explanations of cultural and historical references, 50% Nabokov straight up roasting the author for his mediocre writing - points out plot inconsistencies, factual errors, purple prose and so on.

It's a pro-fic version of sporking. (Lermontov had been dead for 100+ years at the time this translation came out.) If you're petty like me you'd love it.
