Should We Listen to Bad Reviews

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-08-09 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Do you listen to bad reviews when you choose what to watch?

Seeing the 7% on Rotten Tomatoes for Borderlands and debating whether I still want to see. Trailer looks so fun. And Cate Blanchett.

Yes technically, but in the broader scope of listening to many reviews and not ignoring the bad ones or ignoring the good ones.

When something is 7% bad it's probably so bad it's not even funny, idk

However I do look at audience scores more than critics scores. Borderlands has a 7% critic score but a 51% audience score on RT. Sounds like it could be fun for some people if that's your type of movie

I almost always disagree with the major bad reviews. People said to never bother with Oceans 8 but I've watched it 3x now. Same with The Marvels.

Sire there are some that are genuinely awful but for the most part if something looks fun or good to me I don't pay attention to the negative nancies.

I love bad reviews because people tell on themselves a lot. It was bad reviews that convinced me to see Fury Road, cause all the people who hated it were assholes. If everyone hates it.... that's most likely a bad movie.

Honestly, I sometimes feel this way about video game reviewers too. Not to say they can't love/hate what they love/hate, but sometimes it just seems like they are reviewing just to hear themselves talk. (Or see themselves write? idk) There's always this air of "I came into this with certain expectations and didn't really give it a chance or even consider if I was the targeted audience or not" and it annoys the shit out of me.

I ignore everything about a movie I want to see except the first full length trailer. I do a total SM blackout until I’ve seen the movie because I don’t want to know what anyone else thinks or feels about it. I much prefer to go in without any expectations beyond my excitement from the first trailer (which is usually spoiler free).
If I do hear a lot of bad stuff about a movie, it definitely sours me for wanting to see it.

I don’t look at any reviews for a show or movie before I watch it. I’ll watch a trailer, consider if it looks like something I might enjoy and go see it or not depending on that. Other people aren’t me, they don’t know my tastes so I can’t use them as a gauge on whether I’m going to like something.

I do like to read reviews or opinions after I’ve seen something though out of curiosity on how other people felt.

For me it depends on the media and 'why' its getting a bad rating.

If a film sounds interesting enough to me even with the bad ratings, I'll probably go see it anyways - but with books I've definitely ended up avoiding certain titles if I go through the non-spoilery reviews and see a pattern on why they were disliked in a selection of reviews.

if it's something I want to watch and the premise is interesting to me then NO. I don't even look at the trailer or anything. I maybe read the synopses and look at some stills, but never at the scores.
I love horror movies and people (especially critics) have shit taste for them. I don't trust anyone else but me. If the movie end up being reeealy terrible then I'm probably going to just stop it and do something else.
(I'm that anon that sometimes re-emerge to rant about how much they despised the first A Quite Place (96% on RT?????). Add Saw X to the list of reasons why I don't trust movie critics)

Seeing as Borderlands is a very popular IP the critics are going to be very harsh/lenient depending on the IP/genre itself. 7% is quite low and I highly doubt that's an objective score.
I hope it'll be fun for you if you decide to give it a watch! <3

Nah. So many things I've enjoyed got "bad" reviews and so many things that everyone raved about was a big miss for me. If you're interested in something (book, show, movie, whatever), engage with it and make your own decision on whether you liked it or not.

Reviews (to me) matter for things like electronics, gadgets, etc, where people with experience in the item tell me what works and doesn't work about it and whether it will work for what I need it for.

For movies: I'm a horror girlie when it comes to movies, so I only really pay attention to the genre-specific reviewers, and even then I tend to see it anyway because I genuinely have very low standards.

For theatre: I pay attention to reviews, but only because most theatre reviewers are trash and I find it funny.

If the reviews are bad enough it just makes me want to see it more, tbh.

I don't set a ton of score by Rotten Tomato, it's let me down in the past. And the Audience score is too easy to brigade and is more a sign of good marketing (that the sort of people who would like a movie decided to watch it).

I recommend finding 1-5 reviewers who have similar taste as yours and listening to them. I've found mine, and it's improved my movie going experience.

Also I'm going to see Borderlands with a huge Borderlands fan I don't even care <3 but I do hope it's fun.
