I think that would be my default response. "Really? You're bothered by the fact I disapprove of someone doing horrible things?"

(Anonymous) 2024-08-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Whether this is intended or not, it's very dismissive. I'm not particularly fond of Gaiman's work but still look askance at the sexual assault allegations because that's messed up and gross. You don't have to hero worship anyone to find repugnant behavior repugnant, what kind of upside down logic is that?

I think it makes sense if the person is actually going, "I can't believe John Doe in particular, the author of Book and the creator of Movie, would ever do this!"

But I also think people simply going "I'm disappointed in the behavior of my fellow human John Doe, who turns out to suck" are often mistaken for saying the first thing when they aren't doing that.

It also bothers me that people act as if liking a celebrity at ALL is worshiping them and putting them on a pedestal! Like, obviously some people do get super unhinged about their celebrities and that's unhealthy, but there's nothing wrong with seeking out more of a person's work, listening to/watching their interviews, going to see them when they're in your area if they're the type of celeb that does gigs or events, etc. You assume they're not perfect and have normal human foibles; if it turns out they've actually been doing something severely awful, it's disappointing. That seems perfectly normal to me! If someone says "God, I always enjoyed his work so much, it sucks knowing he was doing this horrible stuff the whole time," it's not a reasonable response for someone to be like "STOP PUTTING CELEBS ON A PEDESTAL."

This. I think people are just... being asshats, tbh. Liking someone's work is very clearly NOT putting them on a pedestal or worshipping them, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Yup!
"I love their work and they seemed so cool from interviews I've seen" isn't putting someone on the pedestal.

I've only really seen that opinion expressed when someone acts completely surprised that a celebrity did something bad? Like, in the sense that they were so invested in the celebrity that they started believing s/he was perfect and incapable of human failings.
