Irrational Fears

(Anonymous) 2024-08-10 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought of this as I was on a hike today and had to use an outhouse. I have this silly childhood fear clinging to me about porta potties and outhouses. It's so irrational, but it's the combo fear of falling in or something grabbing me as I sit down. Irrational, illogical, seemingly impossible to shake.

What's yours?

When I'm flying. Not that the plane will crash (though that too) but that it will flip any time it is turning. Or that it will be unable to land, get caught in an up-current or something, and break apart in the air. Vertigo makes flying miserable.

So spiders as my biggest phobia for a start, but in a similar vein to yours for years as a kid I used to be scared of going to the toilet because I convinced a spider would crawl up the drain while I was using it, only while I was using it mind you. I mostly don't think about it now as an adult but sometimes it creeps up on me and I can't use the toiler until the fear dissipates. Or I'm just so desperate I have to go.

I also used to be scared of the sound the flushing toiled made in my childhood home and used to think a monster was being summoned whenever I flushed the toilet so I used to open the door after using it, hit the flush button and would then bolt out the door and down the stairs to safety.

ayrt - my fear used to extend to all toilets and drains. Though that was a combo of the above mentioned fear and an IT related monster/creature sneaking up from drains fear. The way you describe flushing the toilet and running for it was me as a kid too. Wash hands, stretch really far to reach the flush, then quickly flick off the light and run out the door. XD

For some reason now it's only outhouses/pit toilets/portapotties.

Omg, I had the same thing with toilets?? It wasn't specifically about a monster but I was afraid of flushing the toilet. I still get a bit anxious when I do it as an adult sometimes but I can rationally calm myself. My fear also extends to all drains, I have a general phobia of... plumbing? I have something adjacent to submechanophobia, idk how to describe it, but I can relate to people who are scared of that type of thing. I have ended up coping with it by learning about hydraulics and water related infrastructure, cause my fear-fascination was so bad that learning more about how the things I'm scared of work helped me see them in a more rational light. Plus working jobs where I had to take care of blocked drains now and again. If I'm actually around a big drain though my heart races...

I think for me part of this fear is related to childhood associations with bad experiences that my kid brain distorted into a phobia, but part of it is just a fear from nowhere. It's odd.

da but I do sometimes get that random thought that something could crawl up the toilet while I'm using it in the middle of the night. Currently, I don't live near any areas where that's likely to happen but that doesn't stop me from having the thought.

I was going to say going to Walmart but I’m not really sure that’s an irrational fear tbh. I always take my phone and vape inside with me unlike when I shop anywhere else. I’m terrified of being without those two if I get stuck in the store when someone decides to shoot the place up.

The dark. I still get scared of the dark, even in my 40s. Such a damn childish thing.

Every once in awhile this one still gets me as well.

We have zero dangerous wild animals in this country, yet still I get scared in the dark at night, populating the lane with all sorts of beasts.

Idk if it counts as irrational, but I have a fear of electronics blowing up whenever I'm near them. Admittedly its silly with things like a toaster that would only do that with something lethal being put into it, as well as the fact that I like going online and work on computers all the time - I still occasionally imagine Final Destination levels of explosions to happen. It doesn't help that I get scared about electrical sockets or light switches thanks to 90s PSAs about how you can die from touching them if you have wet fingers (like if you had just washed your hands and went to switch the light off) and get scared whenever I remove my charger for my phone with the fear of the plug falling apart in my hand and getting electrocuted like that.

Although finding out that lithium batteries can potentially explode hasn't really helped my fears either in recent years.

I had this same fear until I was waaay too old. I used to grab on to the edge of the sink the whole time because I thought I'd somehow fall in, lol.

I have a weird thing about uncovered windows at night. Just always think I'm going to look out and see someone standing there or peeking round the edge. We have a big window in our kitchen with no curtains so going in there at night is always fun.

Any time I am more than ankle-deep in opaque water, I worry about getting attacked by a shark. And even in swimming pools, I have a lurking dread of a shark coming up underneath me when I can't see, even though that's obviously impossible.

Sometimes in the deepend of a pool, usually when swimming deep underwater, I will have a sudden panic fear that a shark/moster is after me and I swim like heck for the shallow end I can stand in.

Spiral staircases give me an eerie feeling bc of weird childhood nightmares.

Also something about the down escalator (the one going down) that I have more difficulty using them than the ones going up. They seem like they're going down fast .I feel like I'm going to step on the wrong part and fall

Last month, I was at an outdoor festival and I had the same irrational fear come over me for a few moments when I used the porta-potty.

I used to think cars were following me. I'd keep track of the cars behind me and if they were behind me for "too long" (it was always just a feeling LOL), I'd start changing the route I was originally planning to take, just to test and see if they were following me.

I just hate them because they stink. Porta potties are the only thing I don't like about street fairs.

I have REALLY bad claustrophobia. When I was a 12 year old kid I got stuck in a crawlspace in my basement for several hours before they pulled me out and I've had claustrophobia ever since. Don't ask me to go exploring caves or anything like that.

My sympathies. I got stuck in a pipe when I was four, trying to rescue my kitten. I’m still claustrophobic these decades later. It sucks.

If I sit still too long while touching a leafy plant (especially a climbing or runner-ing one) it will start to grow tendrils and roots into my skin.

I afraid of being on a bridge. I guess of it's breaking?! Me just randomly falling. Frankly I don't even know what exactly is so scary. There is one big bridge I am scared of but I find my reaction bewildering. This bridge goes first over a road, then over a wide river, then over some train tracks. I am ok with both train and road parts of it but I just can't cross river part. It's too wide and too windy. This whole bridge is a bit over a km and is my nemesis.
