Okay, I don't know this character or fandom, but in the U.S. going to prison isn't like dying. If her mother is rich, her mother keeps the money while in prison. Presumably though, her mother had the time and resources to make financial arrangements for her child(ren)'s care and financial support before she went to prison, though.

This might be a dumb question, but do you know can you access your money/accounts while in prison? Or do you have to set up some intermediary or something?

Probably through a lawyer/power of attorney designated party.

You can certainly have your prison account topped up within a certain limit to buy goods, but I'm sure you can't, like, get a roll of cash to bribe the guards with.

I don't think you can access it directly, no. So stuff like paying bills will have to be handled by someone else. A rich person would likely set up a trust and have a trusted financial advisor with power of attorney manage things for them.

Back when I was a teller, we'd sometimes have inmates from the local prison call and ask us to send them a check. No idea how things worked once the check was in their prison accounts, though.

In Kate's case, though, her mother went to jail partially for financial crimes so it's very likely that her entire fortune is going to be tied up for a long, long time. If Kate's dad left a will with separate money and/or assets for her (which is certainly likely but not canon!) then she'd still have that regardless of her mother's actions.

nayrt but ahhh, that changes things. Financial crimes means the government can freeze your assets, so that money might not be available for your use or your kid's use.
