Did people actually use anything other than lemon or lime?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember seeing orange a few times but I had never heard of grapefruit until today.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not ime.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I rarely saw orange and slightly more often saw "citrus" in place of the "orange" meaning. Never saw grapefruit.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Be the change you wish to see in the world... That is to say, I will also try and start using the citrus scale again because I miss it just as much, lol.

Not sure I've ever seen grapefruit used, but I can see the logic there!

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So where does pomelo fit? For guys with large...tracts of land?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk why but I could not for the life of me keep them straight. They confused the heck out of me

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I remember the scale! Usually stuck with lemon or lime though.

I thought this was only an anime thing

(Anonymous) 2024-08-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Did other general fandoms use the citrus scale? I honestly thought it was specific to anime fandoms.

I only ever heard lemon and lime being used in my fandoms.

Turned up in Star trek TOS and TNG fandoms. And Quantum Leap. Mostly the geocities and independent websites though, not The Pit. Now I think about it, it was on a lot of Mailing List fandoms of all sorts. Oldtimey stuff, I guess, lost to the ether.

I only saw it in anime or with authors that started in anime. I had been reading fic for years in various fandoms before I encountered it for the first time when I got into Gundam Wing.

I remember lemon being a thing in my tv based fandoms way back in the day (star trek, stargate etc). But this is the first time I'm hearing there is a -scale- of citrus.

I was in a smallish, non-anime fandom back in the early 2000s and "lemon" was used. Not anything else, though.

I remember a bunch of fandoms on fanfiction.net used them way back.

I first came across "lime or lemon" tagged fics when I was in a KPop fandom so...it could have originated from anime but by the late 2000s I think it'd gone on beyond anime

I only ever heard of lemon and lime, and I didn't know that they were a rating system more than just (specific kind of) sexy times

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I had forgotten all about these!

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard grapefruit or orange. I also only heard "citrus" to mean "adult content" or "suggestive content" in general, not a scale including a sfw fruit ime. Like, "warning for a hint of citrus!" I did see lemon and lime used to mean more explicit and less explicit, but also pretty interchangeably. Does anyone recall specific fandoms where the terms were used like in this secret?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, or citrus was basically what orange is in this graphic. Lemon and lime was fairly clear, citrus was a bit more vague.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
You and I had different experiences with it, I guess. I only remember lemon and lime being used and I was confused about what they meant because there didn't seem to be much consistency to how they were applied. I knew they had to do with sexual content, but a lot of writers had different lines for what was included and I'm pretty sure some used lemon for higher rating and some used lime.

1. this is cute
2. I only remember "lemons"
3. I think that could work, but given the way tagging is today etc. we're just ending up the with General Audiences to Explicit/Not Rated.
4. The old forums I used to frequent just kinda did the rated G --> NR-17 rating system, so I was very used to expecting certain literary experiences accordingly.

Also, thanks for introducing me to a new podcast!

I only remember people occasionally using lemon and lime. It wasn't a widely done thing across all fandoms, either. Never heard anyone explain it. I just had to figure it out from context. I assumed it was a thing from some specific fandom and people were carrying it over into others but it wasn't catching on.
