IUDs?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-20 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone used one here? What has been your experience? Aside from insertion. I'm just curious if
a. did it give you acne if acne was not a major problem for you/worsen your current acne situation
b. fuck with your mental health at all
c. lowered your libido

What kind did you use? Anything you want to share, I'd love to hear! I'm super on the fence, all the bad stories are pushing me further away and apparently another non hormonal option is in development, but who knows for how long.

Thank you!!

I have Mirena.

I had it inserted during surgery as a means to solve a non-contraceptive issue, so I can't help you with that (I do have anxiety about getting it out, but that's a future me problem).

It didn't give me acne, but I also never really got a lot of acne in the first place. It did give me major night sweats for the first year.

My mental health was already in the shitter, no change there.

In the same vein, I've always had a very low libido, so...

I absolutely LOVE not having periods. No muss, no fuss, I almost immediately forgot when they were supposed to happen at all and good riddance, I need my brain space for other things.

Thank you so much for responding! Sounds like it's been a mostly positive experience for you! I'm glad to hear at least one positive story!

As someone who usually has heavy and long periods + anemia, the copper IUD was an immediate no from my doc, unfortunately. So, it's good to hear nice things about hormonal iuds.

Mirena user here.
a) I've always had awful acne but I've got it under control thanks to starting on differin gel. I don't remember the IUD making it any worse or better on its own.
b) I've been depressed/anxious my whole adult life. I don't remember the IUD making it any better or worse.
c) As mentioned above, depression/anti depressants have probably influenced mine to be on the lower side, but it did pick up a little bit at first.

In general? My first 6 months were really rough but it's been *great* since. I really enjoy skipping periods.

I also had a copper one before this. It was pretty rough. I didn't effect the three things you've asked about but it made my periods longer and more painful and eventually I would just bleed and bleed. I'm not sure but I think it got a little displaced because it was pretty bad and then I got it removed. This sounds really negative but it was still better than hormonal birth control. That stuff fucked me *up* =D

AYRT

Thank you for the responses! Yeah, I'm super concerned about hormones getting all out of whack getting on a hormonal bc (pills right?)-- I guess the hormonal IUDs have a lower dosage? and it's more localized?

Anyway, really appreciate it. Alas, the copper IUD would probably end up hospitalizing me lol. Anyway. Thanks again!

Kyleena here!

I'm very happy with my cyborg part, the first week after the insertion I cramped like hell, but then it calmed down. I do not have acne, i used to get and still get the odd hormonal zit. No mental health changes, I still get PMS emotional (sad/angry/happy/horny) as I used to.

TMI: My flow has been reduced to spotting, it lasts a couple days longer than the proper period I had before but I barely need pads anymore. in fact I gave all my super-absorbent night pads to a friend and just use panty liners if needed.

The insertion did hurt but I survived. (My friend got the copper one and fainted during the insertion, but we're all different and have different doctors and who knows what.)
I wanted an IUD because taking a pill daily would not work for me. I got it for not wanting babies reasons, not because of health/hormones reasons, and did not have any underlying issues like endo or pcos.

This was my two cents, best of luck with any of your choices!
