For a while I didn't care about her because I thought that whole hate-boner around her was just your typical hating the most-popular mainstream artist thing like what happened with Justin Beiber and One Direction.

But the whole releasing about 60 versions of her album whenever another female artist dares to beat her in the charts is just getting embarrassing. For once I can see where the haters are coming from.

Billboard has released a statement pointing out that the digital variants had no impact on Taylor's 'beating other women'. She would have won anyway. Her fanbase is just that huge.

I know two Swifties and I get the impression through then that she’s trying to rebrand herself as some sort of drama free, everyone’s bestie, nirvana af ray of enlightenment super being.

Of course it’s possible that the two I know are just delusional about their fave since they’ve crafted their entire personality around her.

Yeah, no, they're a mite delusional. I've been a fan of Taylor since Debut, so I've seen some things. It's also important to note that the internet and social media landscapes have changed a lot since Taylor first started posting on MySpace and meeting with fans and making friends.

What she's been doing lately is mostly drawing a few boundaries. Drama is great, drama is cool. Read all the drama into her songs that you want, she's fine with that. The hunt for clues? She loves that. The parasocial feeling of friendship? She's very, very good at feeling like she's people's friend. But lately she has been drawing a few more boundaries.

She is pushing back on things like where people swarmed Jack Antonoff's wedding because she was a guest at it. She's pushing back on the idea that because she's beloved by many that she should be speaking out on all their causes. That because people love her, she needs to do what they want. That every aspect of her relationship with Travis is meant for public consumption.

Her song 'But Daddy I Love Him' is a pretty clear admonishment to her fans:

I'll tell you something right now
I'd rather burn my whole life down
Than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning
I'll tell you something about my good name
It's mine alone to disgrace
I don't cater to all these vipers dressed in empath's clothing

God save the most judgmental creeps
Who say they want what's best for me
Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I'll never see

And, you know, that's fair. People get WILD about their favs and with a fanbase as big as hers it gets super scary sometimes. I wouldn't want to be her. I love her music and I'm grateful she seems to be a mostly good person, but that's really all I expect from her.

i'm 100% with you on this. i was a fan since her s/t album, but the more petty drama that she paraded and made her entire personality was exhausting and turned me off her entirely. she's done a lot of nasty, mean things to other people (mostly women) to try to keep her name at the top of the list, and her diehard apologists only make me hate her more.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-26 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Of course she does drama. She is excellent at drama.

The doesn't mean some of the drama is unwarranted though. And there's a lot of really nasty undercurrents in the current drama of expecting her to dim her shine for other people. Would people ask a man to do that, if he was doing the numbers she is? Did they ask Michael Jackson to back off and let someone else have a hit? Did they ask The Beatles to take a seat and let someone else win an award?

She promotes other women artists by bringing them with her on tour. She just posted on Friday that we should all be listening to Sabrina Carpenter's new album because it's great. Does she promote every woman? No. Should she have to? Also no.

IDEK. Taylor's not perfect but an awful lot of the discourse around her right now just reeks of double standards and misogyny and it's tiring.

+1. Yes, she uses and promotes drama. But also there is a ton of misogyny in the way people talk about her.

(Also, the charts are hardly relevant anymore!)

+1

Absolutely - it's both. She does drama and also creates/projects a specific image fantastically. But people aren't out here calling out McCartney and Lennon, or Ed Sheeran, or Liam Gallagher etc etc for making drama as they make their music, or for being TOO successful.

She's obviously not perfect but so much of this criticism would NEVER be lobbed at a man, even a man claiming feminism/allyship as she does.

People called out Lennon all the time about his drama. They stopped, but the reason for that was also fairly dramatic and something that, as a Swiftie, I'm guessing you wouldn't want to see repeated.

Yes to all of this.

Don't see anything wrong with your statement tbh. I don't listen to her, but I listen to a lot of small, drama-free artists. They're fun and their songs are most fantasy based in some way or another, but that means they also don't attract a lot of attention - such genres always will be niche in music.
