When we were teenagers a friend got the first few volumes of a manga series for their birthday. Said (female) friend was really into music and wanted to be in a band and the well-meaning relative (an aunt or something. Definitely an older adult) picked this specific manga because the main "female" character is a singer in a rock band and it reminded her of my friend.

That manga series? Gravitation.

She'd read or watch it when recommend or something looked interesting enough, but she was never specifically into BL/GL as a genre. I was the one with the big BL phase (and I was the one who recommended stuff or where she found series that looked interesting enough to her to borrow them from me).

Not yaoi/yuri, but at the height of my anime/manga obsessive phase when I was in my teens, my Dad proudly brought me a copy of Idol of Darkness from a local carboot sale. He was so proud of himself because it was an anime, and I liked anime, so it must be good. He was a sweetheart.

We googled it to look at reviews and it very, very quickly vanished from the house, but I always appreciated the effort.

Yeah, "pre-loved" takes on a whole different meaning then. We joked about it for a good while but I know he was always mortified.
