Are the Stardew Valley chars not older?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC the romanceable characters are predominantly ambiguously around 25 or clearly under 25.

There's only 2 out of 10+ that maaaybe could be over 30 but only if you really want them to be.

Certainly nobody 40.

Becoming a fully qualified doctor is 10 years minimum, so Harvey is very likely in his 30s. Leah, Emily and Shane might also be in their 30s. But the rest read extremely young, especially Sam, Haley, Maru and Alex!

Harvey and Shane were the ones I was thinking of. Maybe Elliot too but the older he gets the sadder it is. The others read mid twenties-ish to me. Haley who reads very late teen/early 20s is Emily's sister so it's unlikely Emily is 10 years older than her, right?

Imagining Sebastian as a 30+ year old emo kid who lives in a basement and is still pondering life and death is sending me though. Or Alex the 30+ year old who is still wearing his varsity jacket, calling people 'nerds' and totally gonna be a pro athlete someday? LOL, yeah, their ages may not be officially stated but like. No, the player can't just imagine they are any age

I thought they were for a big chunk of my first playthrough. I was shocked to find out otherwise.

Huh, I guess I know even less about these kinds of games than I thought.

I had assumed that the player character was pretty blank and probably of non-specified adult age.

(Also, excellent image choice. I know it’s so well-known as a painting that some people dismiss it as cliché, but those are genuinely expressive faces and a great composition.)

It's never outright stated, but most of them assume the MC is late teens to maaaybe 30, like if you are a 40 year old farmer hitting on 20 year old bachelor/ettes or having fresh high school grads be flirting with you and people are remarking about how you're eligible it gets creepy fast and was clearly not intended to be that way.

Most of them also don't let you customize your character to look any old/er than the default young man/young woman avatars.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Also half of them start with 'your grandparents died and left you a farm' and if you're supposed to be 40+ years old when your grandparents die, either everybody had kids way early or those are some long-lived ass grandparents! There's definitely an age range that is implied.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn. I want this story now. A game where it's implied the MC is at least 35 who left their entire established life and friends and family in the city to move to a small town instead of a 20 year old who left their shitty entry level job.

The pool of romanceable NPCs are the single 30+ adults, some with kids from previous marriages, and the kids even if they are ~technically 18~ are *not* options; you're too old for them. You can totally hit on their dad/mom though. And the childless cat lady town mayor isn't too bad looking...

DA - I'd play this!

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
My experience with games like Harvest Moon etc. is it's implied your character is 18-30 at the very oldest.

Story of Seasons had a romance option who was a woman implied to be in her 30s, and the whole dynamic was how she was "so much older" than the player and if he was okay with that... Which made me think they were probably 20-25. I was young when I romanced her so I didn't mind, but if I played it now in my 30s I'd be rolling my eyes over seeing a woman my age act like an old maid.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming this is about significant/romanceable characters and not like 'the Town Mayor' or 'Billy's Mom' or 'Susie's Grandpa' NPC in every game who is like 60 years old... yeah.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-02 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just kind of edit in my head that they are older, but yeah. I'd rejoice for a game with older protagonists and stories.

Same. I'm fine with enjoying media with characters different from me, but I'm so bored with characters being teens to 20-something. I'm not even into farming games but I'd give something like that a spin.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck is STARTING farm life at 40?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Midlife crisis people.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck work a desk job in the city then accepts an overgrown, dilapidated farm from a dead grandparent at 20 and is totally able to succeed on their own with only a dog or a cat for help?

If we're arguing about realness, both are equally stupid.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but you're still more likely at 20 than 40. You're unlikely to have a stable job than at 40, nevertheless the heatlh.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
The 40 year old would likely have more startup money to help with costs and equipment though. Owners of startup farms skew older for that reason. If you want to bring in reality, statistically speaking, something like 15% of owners of beginner family farms are under 35.

I'm not saying either is likely. I'm saying both are equally unusual and unlikely to succeed, but also not unrealistic to have happen. It's not like one is so much more unbelievable than the other.

But neither is a town full of magic plants and anime characters with blue hair.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Given how most farming sims start, you don't NEED startup. You have the basic starter tools. A 25-year-old is WAY more likely to inherit a farm than the person who's gonna be 50 in ten years and has a stable job--or at least won't immediately sell it off because of the aforementioned stable job because why the fuck leave that for a farm that's going to be boat loads of more work. Especially when usually in the formula, the entire farm is usually serviceable with only the fields being overgrown so you have game progression.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
People who are unsatisfied with their current lives and want to try something else? Lots of people start new careers after realizing they're unhappy around then. Idk what 40 year olds you know, but it's not like people are decrepit at that age. Do you think farmers who turn 40 fall over and die?

I get this feeling that your sense of "people who are 40" is kind of warped in the "evreyone over 30 is a JRPG elderly person" sense though, so I won't bother to argue with you any more.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I assumed 40-somethings would be the NPCs? Because otherwise 20-30s would be more fitting for that.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-03 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
My secret is that I'm middle aged and I'd rather play as a teenager or 20-something than a character my age. I get mistaken for 20ish so often, between that and the fact that every teenager looks 20ish when it's anime-style and all of them have the same problems adults have (I'm still wondering what "teenage problems" farming sim characters have. Parents? Homework? College essays? Getting bullied at school? School at all? What farming games have you been playing?) I relate more to them than characters who are supposed to be my age.
