I want to see a hot guy in a three piece suit with perfectly coiffed hair telling me how to fix my toilet. It wouldn't make me trust his advice or anything. I'm still gonna go with the guy that looks like a midwestern dad and is holding a wrench. But it would be super funny.

A man who did that would get SO much hate from other men that it wouldn't be worth it to him.

da

A man who did that and actually had sensible, practical advice on fixing toilets might develop a loyal viewer base, though. Assuming he survived the jealousy and displeasure of other men.

Eh, he wouldn't be doing it for those people. He'd probably get a decent audience with women and possibly gay men.

I've noticed a lot of pet care and training tips videos are like this, for some weird reason. A very dressed up, conventionally attractive lady in a pristinely lit just-cleaned room, lecturing on [insert pet of choice] with like ? no animal in sight ? zero clips of said animal and ? zero video demos of the training

I don't get it, but maybe that's what gets clicks?

Yeah, I want to see the person actually doing the thing, that's what a video is for! Mercury Stardust dresses up but she also actually unclogs the toilet or whatever (along with tips for not getting anything nasty on your clothes!)

This is just a guess, but the internet has a TON of really sad, lonely men who will click on anything to watch a conventionally attractive woman exist.

I think it also depends on the type of pet -- and you can usually tell from the thumbnail (usually edited with incongruous reaction face on the blogger). Most of the pet care videos I've had the pleasure of viewing, the human was off camera and we just focus on the lovely pet :)

My respect and trust go up for the rare few people who don't feel the need to show me their face in Current Year. I'm just crotchety and miss old Youtube when most people weren't making videos as a job.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-04 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's crochety, that's just honest. I've got no use for hustle culture on YouTube, and avoid it.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I also like people who don't have intro to their videos and just get straight to the point.

This secret made me laugh. Well put.

I usually just go for the topic in question before anything else. I only get annoyed when it's something labelled as a deep-dive and instead just retells the entire series without any additional information (which... I have noticed that people who show their own face in the video tend to do that more often than someone who is just narrating or using a drawing/edited picture to represent themselves).
