Ichiban's dating status seem to be kind of nebulous. The game implies that he's a virgin with absolutely zero knowledge on how to properly date. He may or may not know something about sex being raised in a brothel, but otherwise, he seems clueless.

Yet the game lets you go to many hostess clubs, not to mention you have the option to date numerous women in both Yakuza 7 and 8 (though the latter is reluctance, Ichiban is deeply in love with Saeko by that point and all of those scenario were not something he wanted.) I think for intents and purposes, those aren't considered canon. This seems to ring true because Yakuza 8 feels like it's hinting Ichiban's One True Love and Only Love is Saeko.

In any case, I hesitate to call him a FuckBoy as he genuinely clueless due to inexperience (half of his life was spent in prison.) It's clear he sincerely wants to be a good person and at worst has some dated concepts about gender and love (again, dude was in jail for two decades), but I don't feel like he's the type to disrespect women at all. I think with some proper guidance, he can excel as a genuinely good boyfriend. Maybe I'm being too soft, I just think Ichiban deserves the world, he's too much of a sweetheart.

The point where I felt most uncomfortable in the dating minigame was telling women I wanted a serious long-term relationship just like they did.

Oh yeah, no, I won't dispute that. Yakuza 7 and 8 is kind of in this weird contrast where it deals with the changing of times, including on a societal cue, but it also carries a lot of outdated stuff. Some of it is, I feel, intentional, others are definitely carryovers from an older mindset over gender inequality.

I didn't like that cellphone minigame at all and found it grossly inappropriate and stupid to boot. I agree. I just think the Ichiban that they're canonically portraying is often at odds at what we're forced to type in that minigame.

Would that future Yakuza games are bit better about this as time passes with better expectation on how not to treat women like that.

I think Infinite Wealth feels like a bit of a downturn in how it writes women characters. In general, I don't mind the series not doing amazing by its ladies because that's clearly not its focus, but IW has felt tough.

Either way, Ichi getting all the honk-honk from every gender and none longterm relationships is my canon.

I don't really agree that it’s a downturn. There’s room for improvement, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t know that rgg has ever been any better. The Ichi/Saeko stuff was painful, but outside of it Saeko was great (sort of like how Kaoru in Y2 was pretty cool everywhere but the romance scenes, which were cringy). Seonhee I liked more in Y8 than in Y7. Chitose fell a little flat for me, but I don’t recall anything objectionable about her writing.

Agree to disagree. I don't find it consistent with Saeko's Y7 character that she blanked Ichiban for a year instead of blasting him or finding a way to explain what went so wrong, and I don't appreciate that her entire drink link with Kiryu is a thinly disguised "she was mad at Ichiban for his proposal/nonsense but she's into him actually uwu".

I unequivocally loved Kaoru in Y2 in all aspects. RGG hasn't ever been great at romance (unless it's between the lines male bonds you choose to view as romantic), but I was sad to read that she was so broadly detested by fandom amd that's part of why she never returned.

I like that Seonhee is in charge and capable, that's in-keeping with Y7, and I appreciate getting to know more about her relationship with Joon-gi; it makes her feel more like a fully-rounded character. I dislike that her drink link with Kiryu consistently references that ~she's just got a crush on him uwu ~because he's so amazing uwu. Yes, Kiryu is wonderful, but we are 2/3 on girl characters swooning after protagonists and it is tedious. I would rather have no female party members than this.

Chitose is great, but Chitose also doesn't have to live up to characterisation established in a previous game. Speaking of characterisation in a previous game, where have Kiryu's feelings about Yumi been all this time? She was basically entirely unmentioned from Y2 to Gaiden, and suddenly she is the one true love of his life, the one that got away, etc. etc.

I actually buy Yumi being the only person Kiryu ever really felt he loved no problem. I find it difficult to get on board with it suddenly being front-and-center when it's been no where for six games.

tl;dr i have a lot of feelings actually, sorry
