But often a writer who makes things I like also writes for fandoms I'm not in. And a good (concise) tag list goes a long way towards recommending those stories even if the people in them are strangers to me.

I've also chosen stories based purely on interesting summaries or tags. On the one hand, fandom has tropes that it seems get adapted to EVERY canon in existence, but on the other ... sometimes there's unique gems where no one has written that for any fandom I'm in and I'm burning with curiosity about the premise. In which case, well. So what if I've never played a visual novel that was never translated in full from Japanese? It's as good an introduction to the characters as canon.
