Friend recs, enticing looking recs in [community profile] fancake etc, and when an author I love goes into a new fandom sometimes I sample it because I'll try anything they've written. (This overlaps with friend recs because sometimes the author is also a friend or a significant other.)

(This sometimes works with pro writers too: I was indifferent to Spider-Man until I saw that Diane Duane had written a few books there.)

Teen Wolf, every imaginable kind of Stargate, the occasional Smallville, and probably more. The only fandoms where I consciously avoided fanworks until I'd consumed canon were Inception and Looper. (I think I still have Looper bookmarks I haven't come back to, because I haven't yet...)

It's easier for me to go fanwork first, and sometimes fanwork only, because I don't consume video content very well and therefore the source has to be really good for me to want to make the effort. I didn't develop the necessary skills when I was a kid. My roommates used to joke that the way to get me to leave the room was to turn on the TV, but I've now learned how to tune out sports (my anchor partner loves sports).

I will try to consume canon first if it's a book that's easy to get my hands on. (Plug here for ebooks via the library! See if your local library has the Libby app!
