I will admit I have never read Sandman but I didn't know that from pop culture osmosis.

Yeah, it's a little weird because Sandman doesn't necessarily explicitly lay out that that's what's going on, and it leaves a lot of it kinda in the background, but that is very much the plot. The basic overarching narrative of the comic is that Morpheus realizes that he has been unspeakably shitty to his past romantic partners, he tries to come to terms with that, and then decides he can't do it so he arranges his own death and rebirth.
