*Drags out big box of red flags*

I will love Mark Hamill's Joker until the day I die.

Ledger's was pretty fun, too.

*Happily waves two fistfuls of big, red flags*

Agree about Hamill. He was amazing.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao I was literally gonna bring up these two portrayals of him that I like, glad it's in the first comment, ty anon.
I still kinda agree with the secret though. I sure love Hamill's and Ledger's Jokers as great villains, but like, I don't like Joker as a character in a sense he's not my blorbo, I don't stan him, I don't like his ideology, etc.? and if I meet any fans that do, I'd stay faaaaar away, nope, no way, not gonna involve myself with someone like that.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Right there with you, nonny. <3

I'm less enthused about Nicholson's Joker, because it seems like that actor only ever plays the same asshole, and he just doesn't feel like the Joker to me. But Mark Hamill brought so much to the role, and Ledger's my favorite Joker yet.

Actually, I completely changed my mind from feeling like the Joker was ... kind of a contrived villain premise to feeling like he was incredibly believable and real when I read The Killing Joke for the first time. I mean, who in the US hasn't had their soul scarred from feeling like our fuckup military-industrial complex is one bad decision or one fit of paranoia away from slamming the nuclear button? Geese, indeed.

Wait, you're not a fan of a man who hates Nazis?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't like Josef Stalin at all. How is that relevant, are you a fan of Stalin?

That's a necessary but not sufficient condition.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
And that he even fears the IRS more than Batman??

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh I am halfway with you on this OP. I would say for me it is more of a big yellow flag, and which Joker and why/how they are a fan matters if it leans into red flag territory.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. Too intense a fan of Heath Ledger will probably have me backing away slowly while nodding politely.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhhhhhh I really can't stand the Joker personally at this point, and I wish he would just go away forever.

But he's a pretty classic villain for good reasons, and people should appreciate classic villains. Nothing wrong with that. Not a red flag at all in my book. Sure some people who like the Joker suck but so do some people who don't like the Joker. It doesn't signify.

>some people who like the Joker suck but so do some people who don't like the Joker. It doesn't signify.

So much this. I base what I expect from people on how they actually treat people, and that's served me much better than *all* the convoluted assumptions that liking the wrong fictional character is a moral failing.

60s Joker is the best Joker <3 <3 <3

+1000
and I'm a huge fan of the Jack Nicholson Joker too, but no one ever talks about him :(

I am very happy for you that you've never met or interacted with anyone who stans the Turner Diaries.

I guess this rule helps you navigate middle school though, so I shouldn't snark.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I gotta disagree. I feel this way about those who idolize the Joker but being a fan isn’t the same. Someone can be a fan because they find the character interesting/entertaining and there’s nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-07 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS.
I find him INTERESTING, but at the end of the day I recognize that he does horrible things and is meant to be a villain.

Also I kinda worry about Joker x Harley shippers that DON'T recognize the abusive dynamic. It's okay to ship them, you do you boo. But recognize you DON'T want a relationship like theirs, but like their dynamic in fiction because it's psychologically interesting.

Yeah, personally I find him interesting because of how pathetic he is over attention seeking from Batman.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Jared Leto. You mean Jared Leto.

(I do actually like DCAU Joker but he's the only interesting one. Every other time he shows up I'm just ugh. Him again.)

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Probably him too, yes, but I gotta think this is aimed at least somewhat at Joaquin Pheonix.

Lego joker?...

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Even the Lego version of the character?

WTF?

Care to explain, please?

There is a fairly toxic person in a community I am part of, who likes to post memes supporting certain points of view (that I disagree with) -- and they are all from some kind of Joker-based meme creator. Like, the Joker is pictured as handing out advice about how I should conduct myself. I used to want to ask if she really thinks putting words in the mouth of a murderous supervillain gives them more moral authority, but instead I blocked the meme sites and kept quiet.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-08 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
As a fan of Hannibal Lecter, I have zero room to judge.

I do get there are fans out there that follow the creeds of really terrible characters like they're their personal manifestos, but those toxic fans are not unique to Joker and are not the only fans of the character that exist.

If you had said being a fan that believes Joker (or, like, Tyler Durden) is someone to emulate, to venerate, that's an aspirational figure, then yeah, I would totally agree with that being a red flag the size of Gotham.
