I don't understand why there is such resistance to the idea Palpatine is Rey's dad/grandad in Star Wars. Sure I get why the edgelord Darth-Evil fanboys hate the idea, they believe their incel selves to be proto supervillains and don't want to fall further behind, but regular fans? Come on, historically most evil dictators have been horndogs who fucked.

For me, it was because her being not related to anyone was awesome. I loved that she was the hero of the sequels and yet was related to no one. So changing it was not good, in my opinion, though not the worst part of TROS.

Also, bringing back Palpatine in general is a terrible idea to me. Vader sacrificing himself to kill Palpatine is the climax of the whole OT. Ruining that makes me angry.

Personally I like the everyone is connected to each other, it makes it feel more epic in that way.

That's cool. Just didn't work for me personally.

I mean, what does it add to Rey's character? What does it add to the setting? How does it improve the story they're telling? Why wasn't it set up in any way in the first two movies?

The reason I dislike it is because there really isn't a good answer to any of those questions.
