I'm enjoying it and have to laugh at people calling it "fanfic" as an insult when it's based on a load of stuff that was largely incomplete by the time JRRT died and he was always adding shit to his own lore anyway.

I have issues with the pacing and the fact some of the storylines don't interest me, plus the Elven rings looked cheap af, but I'm still having a net positive good time.

He wrote it as Anglo Saxo and Norse fanfic himself, pulling all sorts of legends across Europe into his own story. Lord of the Rings was born of fanfic, Tolkien was one of those fanficcers who filed the serial numbers off and published it as an original work.

Exactly! But don’t you dare point this out to certain people apparently.

Do you have any specific examples where he wrote a fanfic and then filed off the serial numbers? Because "pulling all sorts of legends across Europe into his own story" just tells me he got inspired by a bunch of different things.

And if we go by that logic, everything is fanfic and nothing ever is original.

ayrt

Right, and I'm just trying to see where the line is drawn. Like, did he literally write fic about a Norse god and then go, "okay, now I'm going to change a few names and locations and voilà, a new legend in Lord of the Rings!"? Or did he go, "oh, that's a cool idea they wrote about the Norse god, maybe I'll borrow that and apply it to this character I'm writing about"?

Yup. Exactly. Honestly he would have loved the idea of fanfic (though parts of the fandom for his work definitely would have scared him).
