This is just silly. Also I agree that AO3 should not be recommending fanfics - apart from anything else, it smacks of self-promo.

(god, what was the terrible fic I found linked on there a couple months ago...)

Yeah, that was my other issue that I've had with TV Tropes for ages. IME, the fic recs are just not very good. Sure, they'll manage to rec the occasional good one, but a significant number of the recs for my fandom are real head-scratchers as to why anyone would nominate them. Either the person doing it has terrible taste, or they're reccing friends' fics or something, who knows.

Also, the language they use for recs is always wildly OTT - probably because, again, it's either self-reccing or back-scratching.

Yeah. I don't want to name and shame, but I've seen some fics recced that were just... so sophomorically bad, either the author is self-reccing or they have some dedicated friends with bad taste. Unfortunately, not enough of the fandom is into TV Tropes where they show up and go, "Hey, WTF?"

(Anonymous) 2024-09-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, the secret said TVTropes shouldn't be recing, not AO3? I'm confused.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Brain fart, meant to say TVTropes.

(Anonymous) 2024-09-10 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotcha. I thought there was some link I was missing lol

(Anonymous) 2024-09-11 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tvtropes recommending fics is just... cringe. But if we are recommending I think people can choose whatever site they want

(Anonymous) 2024-09-11 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Why is it "cringe"?

(Anonymous) 2024-09-11 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It just screams self-promotion.

Fic recs on TV tropes are invariably either 1. someone obviously trying to self-promote or promote their friends by putting their fanworks on the same level as "real" media or 2. the kind of fanfics that have grown their own incredibly wanky little sub-ecosystem of people who are only fans of that fanfic, and both of those are a bad idea to click on.

But also it feels like taking fanfic outside the fandom economy the same way that putting it on Goodreads does, and it was always weird to me that people throw fits about fic on Goodreads but treat TV Tropes as a good site for recs. I realize it's a lost cause at this point and TV tropes is at least half people's obscure webcomics and self-published Kindle erotica anyway, but I feel like I should be able to send my great-aunt who loves superhero movies and just got her first smartphone there without worrying about she'll stumble on somebody's Thorki mpreg omegaverse porn, it's not actually meant to be a fic recs site.
