If the male animals were just regular boys with animal ears, then the generic human male protagonist wouldn't stand a chance.

I mean why would the girls settle for a generic ass human boy(who's also a jerk) , when they could have a hot cat prettyboy or even a hunky wolf boy?

Unfortunately in this type of anime they're never pointedly portrayed as pretty or hunky, because female gaze doesn't exist. So the girls are usually out of luck either way.

Sometimes they are, but the girls either never even notice to begin with or the guys have awful personalities just to make the generic MC more appealing to the girls.
