Wait what? I was in the Merlin fandom while it aired but this is the first time I heard about that. Did that happen in the het side of the fandom?

I think it was not within the fandom specifically, but more people who didnt like the fandom? Like I remember it was a big wave going to Merlin and half my flist was excited and half was deranged ranting about how they would never because you had to be a pedophile to like and ship and write about it.
