I love queer ships of all flavors, but I'm starting to slightly resent how much more popular m/m is than f/f in some fandoms.

In one of my popular fandoms, there's a big cast, and 2/3rds of the characters are women. The women are just as well written as the men. The top ten relationship tags on A03 are all m/m. Some of them are m/m ships where the characters haven't even met... and they're more popular than multiple f/f ships that have really interesting histories and dynamics with each other, as well as complex individual character personalities, backstories, and current plots. And they're losing the popularity game to male side characters that aren't nearly as well sketched out.

I know the argument has historically been "well m/m is more popular because male characters are better written", but that isn't the case here. Is it too much to wish that things just be more even? :(

It's because the argument "I know the argument has historically been "well m/m is more popular because male characters are better written"" is used because readers/writers don't want to admit that (just like men loving lesbian porn) they enjoy M/M more because they find two guys making out and fucking hot. That's why the biggest pairings are going to be the ones that people find hot.

I'm guessing the answer is as simple as: the fanbase of your fandom, or the location where you're looking for the fandom, is predominantly made up of people who are attracted to men.

People will always make more fanwork out of characters they are personally attracted to. This will never change, and being upset at people about their orientation or making it a social justice issue will never work to change them.

Sorry, OP. It sucks, but there's nothing you can do. No amount of my wishful thinking is going to suddenly make Overwatch doujins and rule34 suddenly become 50:50 male and M/M focused art to reflect the actual characters, either. It is how it is.

My theory is that fandom is largely made up of women and many women don't want to read about other women, it hits too close to home. But reading (and even projecting) onto men gives it a step of separation.

Also many women think m/m is hot and are just not into f/f.

So I don’t like Sasuke and I think the manga handled his arc terribly because he didn’t earn his happy ending at all, but I understand why Naruto just wouldn’t let him go and I don’t think he’s an asshole for it. I believe he should have ‘cause Sasuke was an asshole and didn’t deserve Naruto’s friendship, but he knew that Sasuke had a lot of pain and loneliness just like he did. Also, it’s a shonen and the power of friendship generally wins in shonen, even when the friends suck.
