It's okay, anon. For a while, I thought Homestuck was pronounced "Homestruck." It's just that one little extra letter that is somehow magically tucked away.

I've been privately calling meerkats "meekrats" for ages. They look more like rats than like cats anyway.

Same! I still read it that way at first and then have to correct myself.

You're not alone, but I always read it as 'down-town' first, and then my brain tried to compensate (because I knew that was wrong - friends and family are fans) and turned it into 'D-wonton' which also wrong, but in a different way.

D-wonton is amazing and made me laugh

I'm glad my brain acting like an autocorrect is amusing to people besides myself!

OP

Ha! It appears I am in good company.

Honestly I had no idea this was a common mistake. I do feel a bit better about it now.

Years ago, Sherlock fandom got mad about this show for reasons that escape me, and tried to "take over" the tag on Tumblr...except they flooded the "Downtown Abbey" tag, and left "Downton Abbey" un-spammed.

So yeah, don't worry, it's common!

(...and I'm pretty sure the Sherlock kerfuffle is how *I* found out it wasn't "Downtown.")

Same. And for the record, when it is written in my language you can't really make this mistake, visually looks different. But every time I see it in English it's downtown to me

I had that problem with the (admittedly uncommon) Quatermass movies until I head the character's name pronounced (KWAY-tuh-mass). Still looks like it should be "Quartermass" though.
