If fandom isn't for fast take, overly melodramatic, badfaith interpretations then what is fandom for anyway??

I think it's pretty clear he's not finishing ASoIaF. It'll be a pleasant surprise if he even releases TWoW.

But in the news sites' defense, GRRM does periodically update folks on his blog about his progress (though I guess it's meaningless at this point), so maybe they feel the need to mention it.

I think it's unprofessional and unfair to the people making the TV show, but it's definitely not the end of the world.

The bit that does annoy me is he still hasn't said anything about the GOT TV show changes.

Truly? I had no idea. It could be he's legally bound not to, though. I can't imagine anything else would prevent him from saying SOMETHING.
