I don't care which generation we're talking about, I'll never believe any humans in a Planet of the Apes movie are the antagonists. Just sometimes we get the movie from the real bad guy's point of view, and we are tricked into sympathising with the damn dirty apes.

This has to be a troll, right? There are definitely humans in those movies who aren't villains. But a whole lot of them clearly are.

Yes, yes, every secret you disagree with is a troll. The whole world exists just to troll you, nonny, the one true arbiter of what is right and true and acceptable.

In those movies, humans made the apes intelligent through terrible experimenting. Then they tried to kill them all. And continued to experiment on them after knowing they'd developed sapience. A lot of the human villain characters are cruel and sadistic in ways that aren't even useful for the human cause.

How is any of that not the actions of an antagonist?

If I accidentally created a murder race that was stronger and faster and smarter than us, then I'd want them killed off before they could turn on us. They are just biological Skynet Terminators and the humans are the heroes for preserving their race.

Even if that were true, that doesn't justify the continued experimentation and the outright torture.

When extinction is on the line, reprehensible behavior still does not a villain make.

It's perfectly possible for someone to be the bad guy AND be scared for their life. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

The apes wouldn't have even turned on humans if humans had treated them decently. Both species could have easily coexisted.

How do you figure that?

Two sapient species on one planet, one has to be superior. Simple as that, they would be either at our feet or our throats. You chose the ascendancy of apes over humans, you chose ... poorly.
