... is that really a weird/uncommon thing? In my family we would always put stuff on chairs/couches temporarily as long as there were still other places to sit. So like, we wouldn't cover the entire couch with laundry but we might dump the freshly dry laundry on one end of the couch to fold it. It made more sense to do it there because the couch was just in the next room and then you could just take the folded clothes upstairs when you were done.
