For a lot of long running shows I find that I tend to prefer the first couple of seasons where they are still trying to find their footing. They are still trying to find a direction that works, the pacing is a bit off, the budget is small, sometimes it's (unintentionally) a bit silly and the show doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. I find that endearing.

AHA this is me, especially with supernatural and buffy. their respective first season are so awkward and the editing is all over the place, but they are possibly my favourite.
