RIP Tim Dorsey
(Anonymous) 2024-09-25 03:42 am (UTC)(link)I haven’t kept up with his books in many years but it was a comfort to know he was still writing them. He was such an interesting writer, just totally gonzo. He’d drive all over Florida visiting every location and business he wrote into his books. He’s conduct interviews and dig through old records to find out all kinds of history and trivia and then weave it into his wacky stories. Serge was Florida Man before Florida Man existed. And Tim would include real Florida Man stories in his books which, hilariously, were the bits people would say were too OTT and unrealistic.
Tim loved Florida. He loved the kitschy and the natural and the insane. He championed the Everglades and the everyday people who were just trying to live their lives the best they knew how. And he wrote the funniest antihero ever, a true chaotic good character who bristled at being called a serial killer. Through Serge’s psychopathic, maniacal sprees, Tim showed his audience what was wrong, who was responsible, and why we should care.
It breaks my heart to learn he’s gone.
