This being AO3, they did it very slowly and people didn't really notice until (as mentioned above) they did it to Holmes fandom.

To be a little more specific, some fans had already noticed (and wrote to Support, and got rebuffed) when it happened to their own fics. But it was the Holmes outburst that finally got noticed by people who weren't in the affected fandoms.
