I grew up with the original Trigun and I pretty much agree. I think Stampede had some beautiful imagery and action scenes but it felt so thin on the ground in terms of character development and just came off kind of hollow. Also, no Milly!?
I barely even the remember the last couple of episodes but I know they were a bit of a clusterfuck, and not the good kind.

One good thing to come out of it at least is that it's triggering a re-release of the original manga run. I had the first two omnibuses when I was a teen but gave them away to a friend when I had to move towns and downsize, and massively regretted it when I tried to rebuy them recently and saw they're kind of pricey now.
