To be honest Secret of NIMH /the rats of NIMH books/movies opened me up to fandom/fanfiction and a desire to write sooo

At a con this past summer I got to meet Don Bluth and tell him how much NIMH meant to me and got me on the path to writing and it was great.

The "arrested development" themes in Sofia Coppola films (mostly the earlier ones)

Hipster indie sleaze (I can never admit it IRL, but the older I get the more I realize I really was a typical hipster - even to the point of denying that I was a hipster)

Entertainment Weekly (2000s - 2012~)

"The Black Parade"

Sonic the Hedgehog and TMNT, the first time around. Not so much that it "defined my life" but that it gave me a means to stick around.

the Hobbit/LOTR books. honestly, everything else mentioned above me was media I liked but it never defined me. not even Star Wars, and there was a period just after 1999 where I was super hardcore Star Wars all day erryday. None of it definied my life.

except LOTR. so much so that the movies almost ruined it for me, I was so mad. but I recovered.

Harry Potter, LotR, Discworld, American Girls, Hanna Barbera cartoons, super hero comics

Hmm. There are lots of things I was DEEPLY into for periods of time and still like (the X-Files, Anne Rice novels), but I don't think any of them really defined my life, as such.

Nothing. A lot of media impacted my life in small or big ways. Or is sort of reflection of my personality. But I wouldn't say defined my life. I am just not an extremely obsessive person

The media I've spent the most time on is World of Warcraft by far, like literal decades. Wouldn't say it defined my life, though. The friends I made and activities I did and skills I learned in that game could've/would've been done in any other group hobby.

I tend to not be particularly attached to any one fandom though, even if I'm in them for a long long time.

The Neverending Story (book), Digimon and Sailor Moon probably. Maybe Buffy.

kid of different answer than anybody else but eh.

Die Legende vom heiligen Trinker (The Legend of the Holy Drinker) by Joseph Roth

I read this story when I was around 12-13 years old and it scared the living shit of me. Me and the author were completely different (I was just a kid lol, he was an old homeless drunk), but I saw something of myself there so vividly that it was like staring at a time bended mirror.
I was beginning to have mental health problems back there, even if I didn't understand at the time the extend of it, and swore to myself never to get drunk.
Broke that promise and gave alcohol a chance in my late 20s because I thought I was kind of dealing better with life in general and alcohol consumption was kid of expected in my social circle. I almost tripped over the line of high functioning alcoholism in the span of a few months.
Still struggling with alcohol nowadays and I can't imagine how hard this would be if I started drinking in my early teen like a lot of my peers (I'm not American, here people begin drinking fairly early, especially back when I was a kid).
I think that novella saved my life.

fandom related probably Dragon Ball and Buffy because they were my first real "internet fandoms", but animanga fandom in general made me learn English and then Japanese and that had repercussion on my personal and professional life.

Since my youth was in the 70s, not really. I would say books for the most part. I still love many of the books I read when I was young. Sherlock Holmes, Tolkien, sci-fi, mysteries…I was a prolific reader.

Honestly, I'd say listening to Genesis a lot as a kid defined me. It paved the way for be to be a bit of a music snob, as even Genesis' more pop-like music was still a far cry from the bubblegum pop that I was "supposed" to like. As a result, I demand a lot more from pop music than I probably should. On the other hand, life is too short to just listen to music in 4/4 time.
