I don't know if it's actually true that hopeful stuff is rare!

I think it's a conflation of the hopeful/cynical and light/dark spectrums.

'A lot of bad shit happens, therefor the world is hopeless, even if the heroes actions directly make things better, and will improve even more post-game.'

da and you know what, I think you nailed it. I've seen way too many people call stuff "grimdark" or "gloomy/depressing" when it's a narrative exactly like that: bad stuff happens in the story BUT the ending makes it clear that things are/will become better as a result.
