I think you probably need to aggressively curate your experience earlier when you get into a fandom. I mean you specifically, not general you. This behavior has always existed and it always will. If seeing any of it ruins everything forever, then you really need to take steps to guard yourself against that.

Bigger the fandom bigger the chance of there being loud jerks around. You gotta just curate that shit and don't be afraid to block/mute/etc people.

I've found pockets of truly awesome people in toxic megafandoms. In toxic minifandoms, if you don't fit in with the toxic fans you're screwed.
