Subs for me

(Anonymous) 2024-10-15 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the media for me.

Live action: subs because the mouth movements not matching to what's being spoken really, really bothers me and takes me out of what I'm watching.

Animation: I can do either and have no real preference, if the English VA's are good then I'll happily watch it that way.

I read this as sub/doms war and I was very confused for a moment there.

I remember being at an anime screening and someone saying “keep it down I can’t hear the subtitles”. Still gets a laugh.

I can happily do either. I usually go for dubs so that I can multitask while watching tv; but will go for subs if I really don't like the dub or am just in the mood to read subs.

Plus sometimes the dub version can be funnier, depending on the media of course.

Subs all the way for me. I want to hear the original performances as the original director intended them. Also, as someone who speaks Japanese, I watch all anime subbed because it's language practice for me. I don't get anything useful out of watching dubs, whereas subbed stuff allows me to practice listening to the spoken language and then seeing how my own mental translation of it compares to the subtitles.

I don't have Netflix. Are they unlike other streaming platforms? Don't they have both subs and dubs for their shows?

I would say subs, but then I learned a lot of people have disabilities that make reading subs difficult.
