More likely that the publishers knew people would buy it hoping to get an inside look at the drama.

^ This is the reason. Not "publishers really truly thought they could make big bucks off of her memoirs because she's so cool and a bunch of people are interested". It's awful and cynical, but that's publishing for you.

No - I mean I'm sure that was part of it but there are also people who found out about her because of the drama and then started caring intensely about her. Like, a surprising amount of them actually.

But those sudden surprise fans had no bearing on the publishing house’s decision. It was never about her or her supporters, it was about cashing in on a scandal. It happens many times a year in the publishing world. And memoirs and autobiographies are very rarely written by the person credited as author. An individual rarely writes fast enough for the publisher’s to get the book out before the public has forgotten about the principal players in whatever scandal they’re capitalizing on.
