This movie destroyed me. But I think part of it was I had absolutely no idea what it was about going in. I was just doing a Ghibli movie marathon and it was on the list.

I haven't seen it in years but my recollection is that it is a bit heavy-handed and schmaltzy which takes away from the emotional impact slightly. IDK though.

I watched it and I felt nothing neither. I know it was to show how horrible the war was to the Japanese people (with Barefoot Gen, which has one of the most hardcore scenes), but I can't see the appeal of Ghibli movies in general.

I watched it and it did make me cry, but it wasn’t the most depressing movie for me either. I knew all the spoilers though, so that probably played a big part on why it didn’t destroy me.

I think a lot of Americans were unused to animation more depressing than, say, An American Tail.

I watched this film in Japanese class well over 20 years ago. Being that this was a different time and I had never been exposed to the Japanese point of view of WWII, it was devastating. It destroyed me. It completely changed how I viewed things and what I knew about war, especially that war.

Having no real parents to turn to, knowing the point of view of the child protagonist telling this story - depressing really isn't the right word. I think it's frankly a shallow read on what that movie is.

Mabel has SO much more chemistry with Theo than with any of the love interests they tried to give her. I wanted to like her with Alice more, but it just did not do it for me and I didn't enjoy Alice as a character in her own right-- and it's hard to get into a ship if one of the characters is flat-out uninteresting to me.

I'd still take Alice (or Oscar, who I liked even if I didn't think his chemistry with Mabel worked for a romance and it did feel more like they were both trying to capture something of their pasts) over Tobert in a HEARTBEAT, though.
