I can see that.

Yup. And how fantasy sounds weird to a lot of people if there arent British accents.

Eh. I mean, it IS anachronistic to use 21st century beauty standards for the Tudor period. It's a common approach... but casting Margot Robbie and her chiseled jawline isn't a historically accurate look for Elizabeth I that modern audiences are mistaken about.

What is the Tiffany Problem?

I don't know that I have that feeling about her face. But no one can possibly touch Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth 1.

Omg yes, loved her in that role.

I love her in everything, but it definitely was one of her best.

Funny way to spell Miranda Richardson, but okay. Queenie forever... or else!

The heart and stomach of a concrete elephant!

(Anonymous) 2024-10-25 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of it is that her teeth are also too perfect.

Kiera Knightley also has a great smile, but there are imperfections in her lowers etc. that make her believable in a period piece.

Yeah, I understand that. I felt the same way about Dakota Johnson in the most recent adaptation of Persuasion. There's just no way I can believe she's Anne Elliot.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I always feel silly when I experience an actor as wrong for a period piece, but there really are actors who feel modern and i can't get over it.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
You can say that about PLENTY of actresses in modern times. Better teeth, better genetics due to barely any inbreeding, etc. They just don't tend to look "old-fashioned" (a/k/a homely) anymore.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, it isn't about looking homely vs. attractive. It's many factors, and one of them is that Hollywood tends to have a much narrower range for what's considered attractive enough for leading lady roles than the 21st c. general population, never mind what was considered beautiful by 16th c. standards. It's possible to be pretty... but not Hollywood pretty.

My mom says some people have "old photograph" faces, and I guess the inverse is also true.

Gonna stan here for The VVitch for a second because the director is the only one I've ever heard of who used the "anachronistic face" on purpose. He cast Anya Taylor Joy because he said he looked at her and thought "no way could this girl ever have been a Puritan."

DA
I just listened to the podcast "You Are Good" and they discussed this very thing! I thought of this too when I read this secret.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it doesn't help in this picture that they've got her in soft modern make-up, looking neither natural nor historical.

(Anonymous) 2024-10-26 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I feel it about Keira Knightley, so at this point I actively dislike her.
Also I am so tired of modern makeup in historical movies

This has been an issue I've seen be brought up in other places.

The overly perfected faces in which we, the audience, are hyper aware of such faces being more aligned with Instagram/social media than what we know exists IRL.

It's a byproduct of our society's obsession with plastic surgery/filtered pictures.

I definitely agree that unfortunately Margot Robbie's face can't do well in period pieces because her features are just too 21st century (touched up and overly perfected features).
