that sexuality was not made a big deal of and characters' sexualities were generally assumed to be bi.

Yup. That was huge at the time. It's a lot easier to be harsh looking back, but the show was really different, not only for sexuality but for tone and other stuff, at the time and a lot of people liked that about it.
